Wheat...West coast wheat markets reflected solid week-to-week gains
on Thursday, riding the coattails of the surge across the futures complex.
Even with a weaker basis, hard red winter prices were up nearly 50 cents
on the week, moving above the $8 mark for the first time in three years.
White wheat bids saw a muted response to gains in Chicago futures as the
nearby basis weakened 20 cents.
Weekly Sales...USDA reported U.S. wheat export demand was the best in
two months, coming in at 14.5 million bushels to put commitments at 289
million, which is 32% below a year ago and 14% below the 5-year average
pace. Hard red spring booked 4.8 million bushels and with 87 million in
commitments, sets 17% below a year ago and 13% below average. Soft white
recorded 4.7 million bushels in sales and with 81 million in commitments,
sets 11% above a year ago and 21% above average. Hard red winter booked
only 1.3 million bushels and with 67 million in commitments, stands 62%
below a year ago and 35% below average.
Top Buyers...Mexico was the top U.S. wheat buyer last week with 3.8
million bushels, followed by Taiwan with 3.6 million, Thailand with 2.2
million, Italy with 1.1 million and South Korea with .918 million.
